Naming of Departmental Assets

To advise staff of the naming conventions and approval processes for built assets belonging to the department.


Any built asset belonging to the department may be named or re-named.  This includes:

  • new and existing schools
  • school buildings
  • sporting grounds or sporting facilities
  • training centres 
  • TAFE institutes
  • early years services
  • internet domains
  • education precincts (co-location of schools, TAFEs and/or early years services).

The department has established naming conventions for departmental owned assets and delegated responsibilities for approval to specific positions.

The Infrastructure Strategy, Research and Development Unit (Schools) unit is responsible for the administration of these naming conventions.​


​The following positions are responsible for final approval of the name

  • Minister – Precincts and school names (to be coordinated through the Infrastructure Strategy Schools unit)
  • Deputy Director General, Training and Tertiary Education Queensland – State owned TAFE Infrastructure and sites (to be coordinated through the Infrastructure Strategy Schools unit)
  • Associate Director General, Policy, Research Legislation and Early Childhood Education and Care – State owned ECEC Infrastructure
  • TAFE Board – Statutory Institute names
  • School Principal or Regional Director – School Buildings and Domain Names

Infrastructure Strategy (Schools) unit

  • Managing the approval process for the name of the departmental asset.
  • Seeking registration of the name on the department’s corporate system.


Schools and School Buildings

  1. Name or renaming of a school occurs at:
    • Planning stage for a new school (an official temporary name is assigned, incorporating the site’s street and suburb names e.g. new school at Gowan Road, Stretton)
    • For the opening of a new school
    • When circumstances change, such as amalgamation of schools and/or endeavouring to alter a school’s standing within the community
  2. The following protocols should be used when determining a name for a built asset belonging to the department.
    • Promotion of location or identity
      School names should promote the school’s location or identity while reflecting local and community sensibilities.
      Appropriate names include:
      • Locality or other local names of geographical significance, for example ‘Glasshouse Mountains’
      • Names of local flora or fauna
      • Local Indigenous names
      • Marking cultural or heritage significance.
    • Inclusion of ‘State’ in title
      In the case of schools changing names, the descriptor ‘State’ must be incorporated into the name. In addition:
      • ‘State School’ is to be used for primary schools teaching Prep to Year 7
      • ’State High School’ or ‘State Secondary College’ is to be used for schools teaching Year 7-12 or 8-12*
      • ‘State Special School’ for special schools
      • ‘State College’ can be used for schools teaching Prep to Year 12 or Prep to Year 10.
      • ‘State School P-10 or P-12’ can be used for smaller Prep to Year 10 or Prep to Year 12 schools 
        * NB: the full transition of Year 7 to secondary will occur in 2015.  However, some secondary schools will introduce Year 7 from 2012-2013.
  3. The Principal must consult with relevant stakeholders including:
    • Staff, including relevant union representation
    • Associated community representative bodies - School Parents and Citizens Association/School Council
    • Neighbouring services/schools/institutes and, in the case of secondary schools, all notional 'feeder' primary, early years service providers
    • Relevant local, State and Federal representatives
    • Site tenants, in the case of Precincts.
  4. Upon agreement of name, the Principal should obtain a letter from the Parents and Citizens Association, or School Council, or TAFE Board, or Early Years services management committee supporting the name change
  5. The Regional Office should prepare a brief seeking the Minister’s approval for the school's new name and submit to Infrastructure Strategy, Research & Development Unit. The brief should be accompanied by a draft letter of acknowledgment of the new name/name change from the Minister to the local Member of Parliament, the Parents and Citizens Association and/or School Council and/or the precinct’s tenants.
  6. The Infrastructure Strategy (Schools) unit should seek endorsement of the new name/name change through the following, via the brief as outlined in (5) above:
    • Deputy Director-General, Education Queensland
    • Assistant Director-General, Infrastructure Services Branch
    • Executive Director, Infrastructure Strategy, Research and Performance Infrastructure Services Branch
    • Director, Infrastructure Strategy (Schools) unit, Infrastructure Strategy, Research and Performance, Infrastructure Services Branch.
  7. Once approved, the Infrastructure Strategy, Research and  Development Unit will advise relevant areas and manage any further actions.

School Buildings

  1. The Principal of the school may approve the naming or renaming of school building using the following criteria:
    • Locality or other local names of geographical significance, for example ‘Glasshouse Mountains’
      • Names of local flora or fauna
      • Local Indigenous names
      • Marking cultural or heritage significance
      • The  name of a person with a notable connection to the facility who has:
        • achieved outstanding success
        • been widely known and respected within broad sections of the local community
        • made a significant financial contribution or
        • made outstanding contributions to the public education system or the community in general.
      • Name of an organisation or company which has made a significant financial contribution to the school:
        • when the organisation or company is a fit and proper entity with which the department should be associated
        • where involvement with the organisation or company would not be seen to diminish public confidence in the government acting in the public interest and
        • where the organisation or company’s core business does not conflict with that of Education Queensland (i.e. education of students)

Education Precincts

It is likely that where an education precinct exists or is being developed, there will be a need for a precinct name in addition to the names of the school, TAFE and/or early years centre located at the precinct.

A precinct’s name should promote the location or identify while also reflecting local and community sensibilities.

Domain Names

  • Schools may have an official domain name as well as secondary domain name.
  • The secondary name will remain consistent with the official domain name.
  • Only under exceptional circumstances will an alternative name be approved.

TAFE names are managed through the office of the Deputy Director-General, Training and Tertiary Education Queensland or Statutory Institute Board following consultation with stakeholders.

Early Years Services

  • Kindergarten on school sites
    The name convention will be:
    ‘Name of the school location’ and then ‘name of operator’ and ‘community kindergarten’
    For example: Stretton C&K Community Kindergarten
  • Other Early Years Infrastructure
    The name convention for other early years infrastructure should be flexible enough to allow local community ownership and identity in the name, based either:
    • on suburbs where the centres will be built or
    • on the Indigenous communities in the area​.
      For example: [local name] Early Years Centre.​

Education Precinct

An education precinct is where a school, TAFE and/or early years service are on a single site, or adjoining sites, and the department owns the site.

Domain Names

Domain names are the addresses you type into a browser to visit a particular web site – such as for the Department of Education and Training.
